POLICY
The See the 21st Century Vision Van will allow Lions Clubs to accomplish many worthwhile objectives, the most important of which is the early detection of vision problems. The Vision Van will be available to all Lions Clubs in North Carolina to conduct vision screenings in their communities. The screenings that take place on the unit are screenings only, and should not be confused with complete eye examinations.

The Vision Van will come to any community in NC only through the sponsorship of a Lions Club.

Scheduling of the Vision Van is based on availability to all North Carolina Lions Clubs on a fair and equitable basis.

The sponsoring Lions Club or Clubs will pay a nonrefundable fee established annually by the Board of Directors for each day of screening to reserve the Vision Van.

The Vision Van Coordinator or, in his/her absence or unavailability, the NCLF Executive Director, are the only individuals authorized to commit the Van to a screening.

The Vision Van will be operated based on specific guidelines and procedures found in the See the 21st Century Vision Van Screening Guidelines.

THE SCREENING PURPOSE
As stated in the INTRODUCTION, the primary purpose for a screening is "THE EARLY DETECTION OF POSSIBLE EYE PROBLEMS".

With this purpose in mind the next thing to remember is this is a screening only, and should not be confused with a complete eye examination. No diagnoses are made on the van. Based on an individual's screening results, the doctor will recommend to that individual when he or she should have a complete eye examination. (Each individual may choose the health care professional of his/her choice for any medical care, further advice, and/or verification of the screening results.

"All individuals who participate in the screening must be at least 6 years of age and all participants under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian sign his/her Registration Form."

Screenings include a visual acuity test (both far and near vision), a field vision test (how well a person can see motion in their field of vision while looking at a fixed object), and a pressure check (for the possibility of glaucoma). Other eye problems may a lso be discovered at the time the individual is checked by the eye doctor working the screening.
